Learners also understand main points, details, purpose, and attitudes when people talk about familiar topics as well as abstract or complex ideas. Learners understand many idioms and expressions and can follow conversations and detailed stories. Learners are comfortable speaking about many different topics and are able to describe people, places, and situations, and are able to express opinions and give explanations. Learners are able to analyze and compare information in order to recommend solutions to a problem. Learners use advanced vocabulary and idioms when speaking.
In reading, learners progress from understanding texts written in plain English that are long to understanding a writer’s indirect meanings and more conceptual or abstract ideas. In writing, learners progress from writing short paragraphs to short essays, able to link sentences and provide support for the main idea. Learners have control over common sentence patterns, grammar, and spelling, and their written message is easy to understand
